2012 SASKATCHEWAN FIRST NATIONS WINTER GAMES TO BE MOVED
April 1st 2011
(North Battleford, SK) Battlefords Agency Tribal Chiefs (BATC) and the 2012 Winter Games Management have made a decision to move the event from the Battlefords to the City of Saskatoon.
After a competitive bid process in 2010, BATC were awarded the 2012 Saskatchewan First Nation Winter Games by the Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations - Chiefs Legislative Assembly.
“Hosting an event of this magnitude requires a significant commitment to 3,500 athletes and mission staff from across the province” says Eugene Arcand, 2012 Winter Games Chair.
After a review of the facilities that are adequate to the host for the week of the games, it does not meet the required expectation from the other First Nations and Tribal Councils teams that participate in the games.
“As the host of the games we are responsible to provide certainty to teams and visitors, we cannot provide that guarantee, under the current circumstances” says Eugene Arcand.
BATC is currently making arrangements with the City of Saskatoon to become the home for the 2012 Saskatchewan First Nations Winter Games. “This major event has an estimated impact of 6 million dollars to the local economy, BATC thanks the City of Saskatoon and Sports Tourism Committee for embracing this opportunity”, says Eugene Arcand.
BATC would like to thank the Battlefords for its effort to be our partner in such a large event, “The Mayors of the Battlefords have been very supportive and we look forward to their support on a continued basis” says Eugene Arcand.
